Wild animals

If you discover a wild animal in distress do not approach it! A wounded wild animal is a dangerous wild animal.  Call animal control 818 991-0071 or our hotline 310 455-7268 for further information.

We get many calls regarding pesky wild animals eating a pet's food or coming in to drink a dog's water, etc. What to do?

As human animals we have moved into their habitat, not vice-versa. We must learn to co exist with them in the Topanga ecosystem.

Take steps to make your house less appealing to wild animals . Empty water bowls at night. Secure pet food in proper containers. Secure your garbage cans. AND KEEP YOUR CATS INDOORS. Coyotes find them easy prey.  Even if you think your cat is safe outside, it is not!  It is a matter of WHEN, not IF, your cat will be attacked by our local predators.

There has been an outbreak of distemper in the raccoon population in the canyon recently. This happens every ten years or so and is nature's way of culling the population. Distemper is contagious to dogs and has a very poor prognosis once a dog becomes infected. For further information you can call the rescue line at 310 455-7268. It is our goal to have all dogs in the canyon vaccinated against distemper.
